Instagram Comment-to-DM Not Working? 8 Reasons and Fixes

Most failed comment-to-DMs come from Instagram's own messaging rules, not from a broken tool. A comment can be too old to reply to, the person may not accept DMs, or a duplicate rule may be doing its job. Below are the eight causes we see in real send logs, and what to do about each.

A good tool tells you which one happened. In DMisland, every skipped or failed DM in the send log shows its reason.

DMisland send log: each recipient row shows a Skipped or Failed status with the reason in plain words (example data)

1. The keyword didn't match

The most common one. Check:

  • Match type: "Exact match" only fires when the whole comment equals the keyword. "GUIDE please" won't match an exact GUIDE. Use "Contains" if people add words.
  • Which automation answered: if the post has its own automation, it replies first. An "all posts" automation only answers when the post's own keywords don't match.
  • Is the automation on? An automation that was turned off or deleted while comments were waiting won't send them.

2. The comment is older than 7 days, or already got a private reply

Instagram lets a business send one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment. After that window, or once a private reply has gone out, the API refuses. Nothing can resend it.

Fix: run automations on fresh posts, and make sure only one tool is answering.

3. Another DM tool answered first

If two tools are connected to the same account, the first one to send a private reply wins and the second is refused. In DMisland this shows as "this comment already got a private reply".

Fix: disconnect or turn off the other tool's automation for that post.

4. The person can't receive DMs

Some people have restricted messages, blocked your account, or deactivated theirs. The DM can't be delivered and isn't retried.

Fix: there's nothing to fix on your side. It's their setting.

5. Duplicate protection skipped it (by design)

To protect your account, a careful tool won't send the same person DM after DM:

  • Once per person per post: someone who already got your DM on this post isn't sent another one. You can turn this off for giveaways.
  • One DM per person per post every 24 hours: this one always stays on, to stay within Instagram's rules.

Fix: none needed. This is the tool protecting your account. The send log marks these as skipped, not failed.

6. The 24-hour messaging window closed (follow-ups)

After the first DM, Instagram allows follow-up messages for 24 hours after the person's last action. If someone taps your follow-gate button two days later, the follow-up can't go out until they tap again, which reopens the window.

Fix: keep the button on the opening message so people can tap it again.

7. You hit a limit

Two different limits can stop sends:

  • Instagram's request limits: when a post goes viral, Instagram caps how fast an account can send. A good tool slows down and queues the overflow in comment order instead of dropping it. DMisland sends queued comments automatically as soon as sending resumes.
  • Your plan's monthly limit: when you reach it, sending stops (DMisland never charges overage). Upgrade or wait for the monthly reset, then turn your automations back on.

8. The connection expired, or Instagram restricted the account

  • Connection expired: Instagram connections need renewing from time to time. Reconnect and your automations pick up again.
  • Temporary restriction: Instagram sometimes pauses sending for an account. Wait and try again later.
  • API access blocked by Meta: check your Meta account status in Meta Business Suite.
